The 3 Laws of Social Media

This is our proposal for the 3 Laws of Social Media, inspired by Isaac Asimov’s famous 3 laws of robotics.

1 First law:

A profile on a social network should not damage a person’s true identity or, for misuse, contribute to a person being perceived as who is not.

2 Second Law:

Social media activity will enhance the relationship with others, help to share knowledge and, when it comes to a company or brand, expand the links of sympathy and affinity, except if such activity conflicts with the First Law.

3Third Law:

The presence on social networks must protect their existence, as well as the privacy of data, freedom of information and honesty of established relationships, to the extent that this protection does not conflict with the First or Second Law.

Social media, the Social Media environment, does not make us stop being who we are, people. Digital identity does not convert us into bits, nor robots do not invalidate our values, our ethics and our principles. It doesn’t dehumanise us. Only we can dehumanise ourselves, and it would be exciting not to.

Isaac Asimow wrote the famous 3 laws of robotics in the early 1940s and they first appeared in 1942 in his short story Runaround (Vicious Circle in Spanish). These are:

  • A robot may not injure a human being or, through inaction, allow a human being to come to harm.
  • A robot must obey the orders given it by human beings except where such orders would conflict with the First Law.
  • A robot must protect its own existence as long as such protection does not conflict with the First or Second Laws.
